ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini are all question-answering systems. They take a user query, retrieve passages, and synthesize an answer. The content shape that survives this pipeline is the content shape that already looks like an answer. Topic-driven content (“everything you need to know about X”) loses to question-driven content (“What is X? Why does X matter? How does X work?”) on AI citation rate by 2 to 3× in our measured tests.

Why question-shaped content gets cited

Three structural reasons.

  • Pattern matching. AI engines match user query patterns to content patterns. A user asking “What is GEO?” gets answers from pages with H2s like “What is GEO?”.
  • Extractability. Question-shaped headers anchor a self-contained answer block. 44.2% of LLM citations come from the first 30% of a page, almost always under question-shaped H2s.
  • FAQ schema bonus. Question-shaped content maps cleanly onto FAQPage schema, earning a measured +12% citation lift.

The compound effect: a question-driven article hits 3 ranking signals where a topic-driven article hits 0 to 1.

Run the 30-prompt research phase

Pick 30 questions your buyers actually ask. Source them from Reddit, support tickets, sales call transcripts, “People Also Ask” on Google, and ChatGPT autocomplete.

Cluster questions into article-sized units

Each article should answer 5 to 8 related questions. The clustering rule: if two questions share a buyer intent and a primary entity, they belong in the same article.

Match each cluster to a content type

Definitional → satellite article. Comparison → owned-domain comparison page. Procedural → how-to. Authority → research / data-driven post.

Write the article with question-shaped H2s

Each H2 in the article is itself a question (or a noun phrase that answers a question). Each H2 has an answer capsule.

Add FAQPage schema for the top 3 H2s

How to map questions to content types

  • Definitional (“What is X?”): Satellite article, 1,500 to 2,000 words, 5 to 7 H2s, FAQ schema.
  • Comparison (“X vs Y”): Owned-domain comparison page, 2,000 to 2,500 words, comparison table mandatory, neutral framing.
  • Procedural (“How to X”): How-to / tutorial, 1,800 to 2,500 words, NumberedSteps mandatory, HowTo schema.
  • Authority (“Why does X matter?”): Research / data post, 2,000 to 3,000 words, original data mandatory.
  • Decision (“Should I do X?”): Editorial / opinion, 1,500 to 2,000 words, position-taking with named tradeoffs.

The content map: 30 questions → 5 to 8 clusters → 5 to 8 articles, with each article matching a content type.

How do I cluster questions into articles?
Two rules. Questions sharing a primary entity belong together. Questions sharing a buyer-funnel stage belong together. When both align, you have a cluster.
How does this interact with traditional keyword research?
Keyword research gives you the topic. Question research gives you the structure within the topic. Use both: keyword research to pick which articles to write, question research to design how each article gets organized.
